Colotenango daily huipil.

This post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three cotton/rayon blend warp-striped base panels. This base fabric blend is called "aleman" and is prized for its softness and drape. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade in typical Colotenango geometric designs. The center panel is wider and more heavily decorated. The panels are joined by hand embroidered decorative seams. “The [Colotenango] huipil is short, relatively wide and is worn hanging loose outside the corte. The brocade often includes small, multi-colored diamonds or squares woven in a soumak technique”. (Centro de Textiles Tradicionales Nim Po’t, see nimpot.com) The head and arm openings are trimmed with multicolored hand embroidery. This fine huipil is in excellent condition. It was acquired from Ema and Carmen Tepeu at the La Fuente textile market in Antigua Guatemala. See Ema and Carmen’s pictures in our “Vendors” section. W 93 x L 107 cm opened. (14-09) $ 190. OBO
